Water for Weight Loss

August 31st, 2009

I know what you’re thinking. I’ve heard this all before. Yeah, I should drink more water. Yeah, it’s better for me. Tell me something I don’t know.

Well, do you know why it’s so important to drink water? Obviously since our bodies are 60-70% water, we need to be constantly replenishing that water. It helps for brain, heart and muscle function. Overall, it makes us healthier people. But there is another benefit.

Several studies have shown that drinking water helps for weight loss, especially for those few pounds that you just can’t get rid of. Some suggest that water helps to flush the system and so the body releases some of the water it’s been retaining in the areas of the stomach, hips, thighs and ankles. Other studies suggest that water helps to loosen the joints and helps the muscles to work better. In addition, it seems that having more water in your system helps to boost your metabolism and burn calories faster. Whatever the water does exactly, results and observeration has shown that drinking water can help with weight loss.

Adding water back into your diet can be difficult, especially for those of us who don’t drink much anyway. The times when I have had to drink a lot more water have been a little difficult on my stomach. But this isn’t so difficult when you don’t drink too much water at a time. Space the standard eight 8-oz glasses of water out throughout the day so you don’t get sick and so that your natural habits aren’t thrown off too much.

It may seem like you can get water from other drinks like coffee, tea, soda and alcohol, but the sugars, calories and fats in these beverages aren’t good for you. It’s best to just stick to water, even if you’re not a fan of the flavor. It’s good for you and you will feel a lot better and be better able to lose weight.
