I have to admit, whole grains have never topped my favorites list. There have been times when I have been highly encouraged to eat whole grains and even a few times when I thought I’d try them because maybe one time I would like them. While I still haven’t reached that point, there is no denying the benefits of turning to whole grains over refined ones.
Whole grains can be a lot of different things including barley, buckwheat, oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat or cracked wheat. You can eat them in breads, cereals or a variety of other carbs. Not only are all these things low in fat, but they also provide many nutrients that we don’t get from anything else. They’re a good source of fiber which you need for a balanced diet and to help your digestive system. (But be careful integrating fiber back into your diet. Too much at once can be a REALLY bad thing.)
Overall, whole grains are better for you than refined grains which lose most the nutrients through the refining process. I have a difficult time with this because I’ve never liked the flavor of whole grains. If you’re in the same boat as me, try seeing the benefits. This can be something to push you in the right direction. (I’m still trying to get to that point…) On top of that, whole grains tend to stick with you longer so you’re not as hungry so soon as you are with other foods.
So try replacing refined grains with whole grains. It’s better for you, even though it might take awhile to get used to the flavor.
